Mananthavady

Mananthavady : A name that does wonders for me. It's really an escape from the present fast world to a world of blissful nostalgia..whatever it brings to the mind, the more it brings to the heart...
There are more name associated with this place:

Anchupeedika(5 shops)... wow that used to be old name of this place..

"Manandtoddy" this was the name that was given by the Brits.. Man and Toddy... man really they did had a sense of humor... :)

Manamthodi that used to be it's name coz everybody felt it touched the sky....

One of the main cities(metro... :)...) after Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad. Wayanad was also special coz it never had a place by it's own name like other districts in Kerala... Wayilnaad(Land of Fields) gave way to Wayanad..just for the sake of pronouncing it easily...

About 105 kilometers from Kozhikode, situated in Mountains not "in" actually "on" mountains... The travel used to be fun.. I said about my first travel which I slept mostly.. So never get to know much about it.. but the others journeys were a class apart...So the journey will be coming soon in posts.. now I will stick on to this topic ok...

Mananthavady was well connected at that time to almost all places in northern Kerala...And names of places were so different...Vellamunda,Padinjaaratara(It's a dam site)
4th Mile : important Junction.. Two ways, one way leading to Kalpetta, and the other to Vadakara, Vellamunda, Padinjaarathara....This places are perfect from the travelogue point of view... There are some more names that wud make things more different..
ThottilPaalam, Adivaram, Nedumpoil(all main stops down the ghats on different sides Vadakara, Kozhikode, Kannur respectively).. Each Ghat roads were different.. Road towards Vadakara is steepest of all.... 12 hairpin bends.. Kozhikode route was beautiful of all with 11 hairpin bends and superb scenes... And last but not least Kannur route with 9 hairpin bends was thru dense forest.. each and every route are unique in special ways...

KSRTC Fast passenger used to be our one way out of this place to Calicut. There were other bus services too...Reliance and Kairali.. Jyo can give you all the details as he used to be our Bus timetable back then. KSRTC bus was considered slow and the private buses were like Jets.. and specially when they drive on the Ghat roads its better to hold on tight to the iron bar attached to the seat.. Competition from other buses was the main reason.. I still remember how they(Private Operators) negotiate an hairpin bend.. On the way down they will be in top gear when they near the bend they suddenly shifts the gear to 1st or 2nd and with huge effort on breaking they manage to turn the bus.. First timers will definitely have their stomach in their mouth.... we got quite used to that, hey not to having stomach in mouth but to the reckless driving..

Apart from travel Mananthavady had some special places.....Here are some of them which used to be our fav hangouts during our first year...

Famous STD Booth: These used to be the main hangout place during the evenings.. everybody getting connected to family.. and of course each other... I met Linu, Dipu here... They used to be the part time operators .. :)... One particular instance that happened here I can't forget and the hero was Jyothish... He called his parents and we were planning to go for a movie.. He told his father that we are going to a movie and his father asked one thing... Do anybody remember that.. Sandeep?? Umesh?? "Pava petta perude cinema aayrikyum(it must be a poor people movie)".. and what does that sentence mean.. Movie about people who dont have enough money to buy clothes.. ha ha ha.. we laughed a lot chatting abt that....

The STD Booth was on the ground floor of Haksons Hotel. Haksons and Riveira were the class hotels in those days and we can't afford to go there frequently.. but we went there occasionally may be in the beginning of each month as our pocket moneys arrived.. Specially loved the "Chicken Parts" served in Riveira...Coffee House was another food destination.. but it was not in the picture at that time...We were starting to exploring places... And a time came no place was left unvisited...

Guys I missed one most important thing ... Kabani... the only river in Kerala that flows towards West... I learned swimming in this gr8 river... And it was Renju who helped me.. he almost killed me teaching swimming Tell you what he did... He took me to the middle of the river where the depth was almost 12-15 feet...he pushed me down and then stood on my shoulders... Really that was hell.. but I came out acing in the swimming test... thanks for that dude even though I had mouthful of bad words at that time... Saturdays and Sundays were the fav time for swimming...
There are lot of stories about Kabani and you will find them very soon.. Signing off as of now...

De Circle Goes On n On.......

Now it's high time to introduce rest of de Circle....hey it's not easy to put everything in here so I will write what was the most common thing.. rest you can fill up... :)

Amith Kumar:
Perfect Hindi speaking guy from Bhilai.
I was really at home when I found that one more person is there who was more into Hindi than Malayalam...I remember people used to tease him a lot bcoz of language but he was quite cool with that...and sometimes he wud swear in Hindi like anything...I think he taught everybody Hindi more than what he learned in Malayalam...Everybody called him Bhai....

Renju S Raj..
Sahitya Raj.. but Sahityam was no where near him :) .. perfect Kollam person...But he was specialist in one thing : He sketches brilliantly and I still have that face in my mind he portrayed of our Ravi sir(Physics) on our desk and I am quite sure even sir's own photo will not be anywhere near that... He have that particular ability draw everything in a comic sense ..what do we call it....ya Caricature....Hey Guys remember what he did to Sudeesh sir in final year... I still can't hold my laugh thinking of what he made on that day.....

Rengith Kumar:
Always the coolest dude.... I dunno what other phrase can suit him.. He was one of the first guy I met in college.. and he belongs to Tvm and that was the enough to strike a conversation. Most of us were from Southern kerala so there was always a easy understanding among us....An all rounder in everything...

Arun Kumar:
Salem and TVM ... he belongs to both places.. The only tamilian in our college... When I first met him he was a kinna serious guy but I was surprised to see how he mingled with everybody.. he was so cheerful, And I haven't watched Tamil movies in my whole life put together as the number of movies I watched along with him...

Sivaji Ram:
Always calm, smiling, Studious, he carries himself very well.. Never met a simple guy like him. I was really lucky to have him along with me all during our boring labs.. he used to be the person who completes the task and we just used to put our names alongside him.....Vaikom is his native place.....

Runcy George:
Indescribable..Like Ben Stiller.. a spring type character.. always onto something.. has the brilliant touch of commenting on the right moment...He belongs to Kochi...

Linu Raj:
He is one of the guy from ECE who never showed any bias.. he was always with us no matter what the situation wud be... quite down to earth person with a nice streak of humor.. Specially remember him during Maziini .. our ticketless travel.. me. him, alshob....just enjoyed that travel....from Paripally.. the perfect Southern Command... we had lot of things in common when me met first...

Alshob:
A simple guy.. helped me out a lot in our subjects...The best feature.. a terrific athlete...Everyone has that flying catch in their mind whenever cricket is mentioned.. the real powerhouse wicketkeeper... no slips required he was equal to one keeper + 2 slips... saved us lot of runs.. he is just wonderful...and not to mention he is from kollam..

There were some other prominent guys in our class.... We used to call them First Benchers... Deepu, Shameer, Sabir.. we never get to involve with them specially me as I was in a totally different league.. but never missed an oppurtunity to have a say with them... it took long to bring them to our side of life.....I don remember Deepu ever bunking a class but Shameer ya I know a lot...

The truth was I was far from other guys during my first year.. It was real tough to say goodbye and that I learned from my previous college where I just went for 6 months.. So this time I made a stand to be far from those sort of emotions but I was not true to my words..as a matter of fact college didn't allowed me to, as this college had the speciality of pulling it towards itself and not to mention about the class.. I was soon into the whole league of CSE.And Soon the whole college...My college was real special....

These were the persons I mingled with most of the time...
There are more people to introduce, but as I said first thing first.
The circle goes on, as each day, week month and year adds new point to the radii..
Gals were nowhere in picture during the first year so they have to wait..

The Students Union - 2

The formation of Students Union....

I talked to Umesh and he said I just gave an overview on this topic. He said this event can't be bundled off as a single page. He is right and I knew it but I didn't wanted things to be lengthy so I restrained myself from elaborating it. As a matter of fact I don't remember what happened exactly. We were blocking the road and enjoying that like anything.Lot of things happened in the college and I think not being there was an mistake but still I was there on the road doing some real nasty stuff....Kinna nasty stuff for me coz that was the first time I ever did that and I never imagined that I will be doing that..

Untill now I treated this blog as an rough draft for the book I am planning to come up with in coming years. But as I am getting into the events, I learned there's more to the book . It's more about the life we had back then and it would describe a lifetime for many of us. Kuddos to Umesh for making me goo deep into every event. The life back then was not even imaginable at these times. I was more in a sort of traversing back to history regardless of what happened around me. I became totally absorbed in the past that I almost forgot that I have a train to catch. Anyhow I made it to the train and now I am seated on a bench @ Seawood station.

There's lot to write about the Students Union. I think that was the first time every Student of the college came together for a common cause.I will give that credit to one person, Sandeep. Regardless of what we were at that time , one thing was sure we came out of that strike as different individuals. Individual was not a concern at all , all that mattered was "US". The road block even though it was a partial success, it let us know one thing, that we can change things with a little bit of effort. It was something that changed my view about things and when I did that thing(inflated the tyre) I knew everybody is behind me and no matter what they are gonna be by my side. That gave me a special feeling of being one among everyone.Though it was just a small thing to do compared to what we end up doing in later years ,but that was enough to break the silence of non-doing or it was enough to break the shackles.

Sandeep was staying with us and we discussed lot of things about this thing, but there was a different person altogether on the scene. I dunno how he managed to manage the un managed things. He was the person responsible for making us think in the same way regardless of what party he was affiliated too. I know he will never take credit for that. but it would be unfair on my part if I dont say anything about him. Sandeep was the perfect person we all ever needed. He kept other's interest ahead of his own and that made him darling of all. He always had an view and that seperated him from the crowd.

The Students Union.....

There was one major event that was the real crowd puller at that time....
The Rise Of Students Union...

As I remember our first principal was a relative of our Sakhaav Sandeep.. really.. I dont know if everyone knows abt that or not..So he was constantly in touch with him regarding the affiliation issues. But he was transfered soon and we got a new principal who was a lean felow, with specs I actually forget his name.

Our college was also known as REC(Reservation Engineering College and not Regional Engineering College) as all the students got admission under some sort f reservations.. I got it under RP(Reserved Police) quota..anyways we were glad that we made it in there.. So at first we were not that worried about AICTE affiliations. But I think situations got worse and we were in a doubt whether we will get that affiliation or not.

That doubt paved the way for getting united and fight for our rights... I dunno exactly what was happening behind the screens but everybody was thrilled about striking.. Striking for the first time in our new college...I studied in St. Xavier's College Thumba, Thiruvananthpuram and had already experienced the real power of striking.. I was just curious how this is gonna happen in my new college as we were not under any Political party. Anyways it was just a matter of time and very soon a Students Union was formed for the task of getting affiliation. College authorities were clueless about whether we will get affiliation and they assured us that as we are a Govt. College and we will get that affiliation anyhow. But it was not enough to convince us as we had seen many other Engg. Colleges shutdown. So we got engaged....

It all started with Road blocking campaigns.. It's just indescribable. We blocked the road that connects Mananthavady to Kalpetta and that to in front of our college bus stop. Many four wheelers came and they were driven away. As we were shouting slogans and demanding for our rights we saw something very annoying. Our college Jeep was in front of us.We all thought "How Dare"... And me and Sam were out in front, we didn't thought about it twice and we did what we were supposed to do.. Infalted all the tyres of the Jeep. Kudos to Sam..

Everyone was quite happy with the strike. We were shouting like anything when they mentioned that they are gonna call police. "Pull aane pull aane , policum patallam pull aane".. I dunno whether we really meant it... I was glad that There was no RAF(Rapid Action Force) camp anywhere near by. My father used to tell me RAF was specifically designed for these situations where normal life is disrupted and RAF people are taught to show no mercy...Good God they were not there..

A bunch of students were up in the college. guess what were they doing.. "Gheraoing principal". I liked this part very much coz there were lot of incidents that happened inside that office that were humorous. Nowfal was drinking the tea that was served to the Principal.. I still have that image in my mind.. and lots.. hey guys you can come up with those...

Police came and the matter was all solved after a settlement that college authorities will look into that matter. I dunno what was the settlement or how it settled.. Sakhaave tell us abt it... And after all the dramas I found myself and Sandeep in front of Anitha Madam.
I thought everything gonna be over soon, they are gonna call my parents and take some disciplinary action against us. But it was nothing like that. Anitha madam was always cool and she very well know how to handle this things...here's the real conversation that happened that day:

Madam: What are you people up to?? Ningal enthina strike cheyunne.
Sandeep:.........blah blah blah(he told the reason).
Madam turned to me.
Madam: Nee Jeepinte tyre oori vitto???
Me: No madam njan Jeepinte tyre ooriyathe illa.
(I was laughing like anything) Madam was supposed to ask whether I inflated the tyre but she ended up asking did I removed the tyre.
I didnt lied .. I said the truth Isn't it guys???

Sandeep what happened next????

Anyone who remember please come up with what weird things happened inside Principal's office that day. Everything was quite weird that was happening that day.
This topic is not complete.. I will come up with some other matters real soon...so keep coming back...

"Pull aane pull aane , policum patallam pull aane"

Actually we shouted this slogan after the arrival of police. We were so brave then. And sad part is that we never got any affiliation (am not sure, whether I can say it here or not). But we did succeeded with out any kind of affiliation.

I did remember some thing. When we blocked the road infront of our college, the police diverted the vehicles from thonichal (1 km away from College), so that vehicles will reach mananthavady with out any trouble. After some 1 hour there wasn't any single vehicle in the road. Thats when we decided to head back to college and gheravo the Principal.

We had one more strike at Mananthavady town, right? Dont remember much now. When was it?

Sandeep.S said...

we missed one thing..after that road block, we went for a meeting at collectorate in kalpetta. There we have amith also with us. and Revi sir was there..in that meeting we have some demands and the collector defended all those. we were not armed fully, so we left without any gains. The only gain was that we proved we can do something.

Meenangaadi........

Meenangaadi : An Unknown place till we went there.. It was on the way to Sultan Battery (Sulthan Bathery)..And what was the purpose for going there??? No Mechanical Labs in our college.. hey don't forget the college was new.. it didn't had it's own building then how come it could have it's own Labs.... :)

Praveen sir was sole person responsible for conducting Mechanical Labs during our first year. He was the best teacher we could have at that time. But he went soon after our first year was finished to join merchant navy.. He mingled well with students and he always had that special sense of humor that was required to handle guys like us. I dont remember anybody saying that they hate him.. He was just superb.

We didn't had our college bus during that days so guess what we had to go by our state owned Parakkum Thallika(The KSRTC Bus). We used to reach Mananthavady bus stand by 9.20 and we had to board the 9.30 bus to meenangaadi. I dunno whether that bus was specifically arranged by college, but very soon that bus was gonna be ours. And when the bus started, we were into our usual "Aarpo Vili's".. Other people in the bus stand wondered where the bus actually went.. to meenangaadi or to Kudaravattom... anyways it was hell of an trip...
It was an trip so how come we are gonna miss the songs... and we were singing all the way...
Actually the bus was supposed to carry other passengers en route but who ever boarded the bus felt annoyed by the way we treated them and the bus. So it was not a new sight when they alighted cursing us all the way to their place...

Everyday journey started with one particular song, written by our gr8 Renju..."Wayanaatil oru college unde.. dithaii thaka thai thai thom, "... hey guys do you remember that song... Renju post the song. it was an wonderful song and we were just enjoying every bit of it...

Now to the more interesting part..The Jeans Era..... It was "The Labs" season and all were requested to come in Jeans(specially girls)... So this wud be first time every one's gonna see all our class girls in Jeans.. Many comments were passed as we watched them in their new form... Sorry I cant post them, really those comments used to be funny but not in a bad taste... Guys remember some of the comments...

Now to the serious part, the lab were four types Lathe , Welding , Sheet metal and one more I dont remember .. everything was just fun.. getting our hands to things for the first time.. Lathe was the magical machine.. Sheet metal was quite boring.. Welding was interesting.. the last one it has to do something with Carpentry.. I don remember.....hey guys remember anything??? Praveen sir used to move around from one lab to another assisting us in our new found thrills... we missed him very much after he left....

Then Poly Canteen..it was not like our college canteen but still the word canteen has that unique feeling of grouping up and enjoying....

Not to mention the return journey.. we used to walk 2 km to reach Meenangaadi bus stop. And that walking was just an excuse to pulling legs and making all sorts of fun.. Usually the road was crowded by us.. walking in different groups.. changing groups running here and there.. we were teenagers back then.. at last we will make it to the bus stand then we would split up in respective groups and will be on the way back home on different buses... Really enjoyed those morning trips and during the return journey we all will be almost out of our breath... Sometimes doesn't having a lab of our own will be quite entertaining... Isn't it guys....

GK

GK :It stands for "Guruvayoor Keshavan" not General Knowledge....Guruvayoor Keshavan is perhaps the most famous and celebrated Elephant of Kerala. Standing over 3.2 meters tall, Keshavan was known for his devout behavior. Keshavan was conferred the unique title "Gajarajan" (Elephant King), by the Guruvayoor Devasom. Now you know who GK is, but in here I am not talking about an elephant but of a human elephant. Hey dont kick my b*** for that dear...

We were fast friends coz it was so difficult for anyone to stay away from him..So charming, humorous, always worth spending time together.. It's really hard for me to describe him.. He stayed in Thonichaal...and one particular instance I would always remember is that when he came late to our HOD's class...and our HOD asked" Thoni kitaan vayikiyo(whether ur boat was late)" and the whole class burst up in laughter.. I still cant make whether HOD was furious about it or he was just making fun for coming late.....Anyways our HOD was damn *** ****. Hope you people can fill that up....

There was an incident which involved me and him. Class was in progress and we were in good mood to enjoy. I was tapping on the my desk and our GK was singing or smiling. He was sitting right behind me. Dunno how come our sir heard that tapping and he looked in the direction of sound, sensing danger I ducked and GK was there with all his hands on table and wondering as sir stared at him. The result was obvious "Get Out" is all what we heard and GK was fuming at me. And again a laughter series opened up. Hey guys no prizes for guessing who the teacher was... ya the same HOD.....

It was always fun when he was around.. I know he still wanna beat me for that get out incident. hey buddy cool down I am all yours when we meet next time...He and Renju made the perfect couple(not in that sense ok).. they were always together.. always onto pulling some strings.. or pulling some one's legs.. they always kept everybody around them up on their feet....And he was the guy who was responsible for finding the Seat Out Technique(pushing of the person sitting on the edge of the seat).. So it was always good to have four eyes when he is anywhere near....

He was the life of our class and when he went away we missed him like anything... hey dude u rock.....

Kaho Na Pyaar Hai- The premiere

The Song "Na tum Jaano na hum" was real famous back then. And of course one more song "Ek pal ka Jeena" was a good dance number.. Both from the movie "Kaho na Pyaar hai"..It was in Feb when this film released in Wayanad.. And "Sarika" was the grand theatre where it was screened.

We were there for the 2nd Show(9.30 pm) and when we reached there we were glad to see some familiar faces from college.. There were about 20-25 of them.. So it was a good get2gether of some sort.. never know how come everybody planned to see the same show...
We got our tickets and after some puff breaks we were in our seats.... Film started and it went quite well until the first dance number was on the screen....

Some of our guys got just excited and started dancing... Local people who came to watch the movie objected as they were not able to get a proper view.. Names were called and it was the beginning of a duel.. As the song finished everyone was back in seat.. It was quite dark so it was hard to see who was dancing.. but we were sure the dancers were some among us...

But that was just a beginning of what that was waiting in queue.. When the next song came it was an hell broke loose... People started dancing and that was the spark that started the explosion.. Local people were really provoked and they never thought twice about it and they started hitting right away. A small group of people sitting in front of us turned back and started calling names and when they were about to hit Naushad came from nowhere and landed a god punch to one of them.. they were taken aback.. they never thought we would be hitting them back. But what awaited them was far more worse..

After the first verbal abuses all of us came to know that we were not 20-30 in numbers but around 60-70.. (may be all the boys from first batch was there)...But Local people didnt expected that we were this much in number... We had that surprise element and very soon we out numbered them.. after everything was over we just bundled ourselves out of the theatre and were very soon on the road walking along the Kabani river...We were laughing like hell, running like hell and introducing each other on the way.. i remember meeting Rajesh T C on that day... But that day our Muthaappa was the lead....He was just brilliant leading us out there in darkest hour of the night.. now dont ask me who the Muthaappa was....that midnight walk under the moon was just superb.. and not to mention we cudn't catch up with the movies climax for next few days...

For next few days we never mentioned that we were in Engineering college to anybody in the Town and I think you guys better know.... why????

Hope everybody has something extra to add... It was one of the best movie I watched where climax was happenning not on screen but right in front of us.............

Room n Roomates.........

The other side of us..

Ya being in college was a different thing, but back in room it was always a kind of home feeling...
Some will cook, some will go out purchasing things and some will wait for their turn to eat... it was so much of fun back there... As I mentioned it earlier, I got a second home with a new family but gradually the members increased as we get to know each other well...

It was always fun.. @ my first room in Thonichaal(Paul Sir's Guest house).. Jishad, Sanoop, Sreejith, Baburaj(Hope someone still remembers him) Umesh, Sandeep, Jyothish and me... 8 in all... And mornings were always busy, getting ready and getting late :).. Then a walk to the college till our bus was introduced.. or catching auto... everything was there to be enjoyed.. those silly fights.. Jishad moved near to college and Baburaj moved back to tvm to join another college... the rest of us got ourselves a new house , First floor of a unfinished home... It was quite fun back there.. Our new owner was an military man... he liked us and always had some words to say about discipline and we had all ears for him coz he was so nice to us... No rules and regulations, I think that was a blessing in disguise.. coz we made the most from it...

Then one day Sunil join us... He was staying with Monkey Boys(I remember thtz what we used to call them, right Nowfal....) And so our family members increased... Sanoop, Jyothish(they lived nearby just 3 hours travel from Mananthavady) visited their hometowns almost every weekends and the other guys stayed back...Coz traveling to Tvm every weekend wasn't a good idea after all..still we eagerly waited for some 2-3 days holiday...We used to travel by bus and then by train and it used to be a minimum of 14 hours travel one way...So it was very tiring.. So we just went once in a month... Train travel was just fun... will come back to it later, coz Renju has one funny incident to mention abt a particular travel..( remember meeting ur uncle dude????)

Lot of funny things happened in our new room.. will just point out some of them and I want Ummu, Jyo,Sand to do the explaining part...

Lot of things happened...And it's easy to loose count on them but never easy to forget them...

Later in fourth semester we moved to Acchayan's house far inside the village in Thonichaal....it was hell of a distance...And the worst part was when we run out of things(Cigarettes, house hold items) then it wud be a difficult thing to come to a decision about who wud be fetching that...It was a left alone place.. Earlier Ajith Ajay and Sivaji lived there along with the owners.. But now it was just us guys.. no body's there to poke in our business and we were quite enjoying our stay there......

Hey I am straying from the first year.. I will come back to the Stay again... but it's high time to get back to the roommates part.. Actually I shud have talked abt them earlier but I know it's never too late for them....

Sakhav(Sandeep):Remember him with clips on his teeth??? One story was quite popular about him and the creator was none other than Binukumar C... Hey Sand ;) Wanna throw some light on that?? (Guess what here you can point at urself only... ok...) Just kidding just put in your views abt our other roommates.. The legend from Varkala...Avan oru aal alla... avan oru prasthaanam aan...

Ummu(Umesh): The gr8 hockey player... he has always had those hockey stick moments in his armour...he was so funny.. A pakka military guy... we used to call him Sainik.. there was one other name hope that's not gonna be so much funny....He is from Bhoothakulam(Paravur)...more or less like an hollywood hero.. carry's tht look always...

Jyo: The automobile guy... he was so funny and I still remember his chats....More than that he was the guy who sleeped the most... Sleep was his best frnd... A sort of serious guy at first look but a real pavam inside....He bleonged to Parapangaadi and Thrissur... Ivan aal oru puli aan...

Sreejith: I loved this guy from the first day itself.. he has my brother's name.. so it was instant bond... A good football player always talks about football..I hope your fav team is still holland dear... He came from Pattambi.. Dont go by his looks.. he has more in store.......

Sanoop: He was quite a serious guy.. talked only when it was necessary.. Whenever he comes from home we waited eagerly for that Kallu Mekkai acchaar.. He was a studious guy... the first guy to walk out of a university exam from our class and soon I followed.. It was hell of an exam...
Vadakara(Orkaateri as he fondly calls it).. he belongs there.. and the Chanda(fair) was popular among us.. we went there many a times...

Jishad:What do I say about this guy.. cool, kind smiling... he loved the Dosa Upma from rajettan hotel and as far as I remember he never ordered anything else in breakfast during his days with us...from Ottapalam right???

Sunil:the another prashthaanam... he was the heavyweight among us and I still believe he can still beat us on that... always ready for some sort of mischeif.. he always experimented durin gparty's... remember guys.. the Ash example... it was quite funny...this heavyweight is from thrissur..Kutti Sankaran was his pet name....

Baburaj: Dont remember much of him as he was there for only one month.. he was a funny person always up with some sort of jokes.. He led us to the destruction of paul sir's kitchen items..later we came to kow about a truth abt those food items... it was a real revelation....
Attingal is where he belong from...

And of course me, we formed a perfect family.. slowly the strength increased and as far as my memory goes, during last year of our college almost 20 person were living in 2 adjacent rooms in the Hostel... And everybody will be here in my blog.....No body is escaping dear.....

About the Ghost thing... It was Sandeep who got sacred seeing the ghost in the back hill of our house. He came running in, screaming..." Avide aaaroo nilkkunathu njan kandu, Satyam"..!!! It was night, between 9 to 10 i suppose. We all were little sacred, but there is strength in a GROUP. So we all came to the veranda with the light on. Owning to a 40 watt bulb, we couldn't see much further into the bushes. Just to make sure nobody was there, we started throwing small pebbles into the GHOSTs direction. To our surprise somebody started throwing back stones from the hill. GHOST was at an advantage as he was on top of the hill. That was it, everybody ran inside. Then, Sandeep took up ARMs. So did we.. Loaded with a small torch and some Knifes and sticks we decided to climb the hill.. just then the Power went off... Then what... we all came back.. it was pitch black... Nobody could see anything.... The important thing was the timing of the events, seeing the Ghost, Stones being thrown, power went off at the right time... All this made it a strange incident.. we still don't know who it was, maybe a thief.. not sure.. The Mystery continues.............:-)

As far as I believe everyday was a new day with lot of new things happening...Here's about My first party..Sanoop, Jyo, umesh left for their hometowns and Me ,Sand, and Sreejith were left for the weekend... we decided to have a party.. A Pint and a Quarter(Dont ask me which brand.. I only remember it was a Regularly Used Medicine), more than enough for three.. We were short of glasses so we went down and took some glasses(Decent "kuppi Glasses") from our Owners home. We enjoyed drinking.. It was my first heavy drinking.. I was really kicked up, then broke 2 glasses and not to mention ended up puking all over the house and Sandeep n Sreejith were fast to drop me on my bed and placed a bucket under it..And I used up that too.. Next day morning it was hell of a job to clear the things... More parties were there to follow so I was just getting experienced.. But really it was one hell of a night..not to mention we enjoyed it like anything....

The College BUS............

I think this topic needs no description but it's worth mentioning as it was always the inseparable part of our college life.. Whether we traveled in it or not but we enjoyed the special ride we used to get once in a while.. It used to be the Symbol of Engineering College and at that time we were the only college with the Bus facility.. Even the big building adjacent to us was nowhere near to boast something like that...

The Bus Came later in the year and till then we were all "Natarajans" or The Walking Guys....
Bus was just an escape from that walking in the beginning but slowly it became an entity in everyone's life... I think it has seen all the actions over the times .. may be students changed but it still remains the same... It was a mute spectator or witness to everything that happened in and around us...

(Now dont say I have to put a bigger picture, frankly this is all I cud manage at this point of time.. may be I will update it ASAP for bigger n better pics.......)

This is were it stayed when it didn't had anything special to offer............

We had gr8 times being in it.. Long trips to Kannur and Kasargod Engineering college or the IT mela tour to Trivandrum. It was all along with us. It's true everybody used the bus from seniors to juniors , teachers everyone but if there's anybody who actually lived along with the bus was the first batch..... Coz the college was so small and we knew everyone and everything very closely and we had enough time to spend with... Sometimes being small has it's own advantage in the sense that it is easier to know each other and I am really proud our college was small enough to let us take that advantage.....I just loved to travel on the foot boards and our Drivers were really kind enough to let us to be there... Sometimes we were the part time "kili's"... we just enjoyed it like anything...The frequent "Anthakshari's", the couple seats ...it had every stack of enjoyments filled in it in all corners......

Remember Me...........

Even though this context is regarding bus only, but I dont want to miss out the other vehicle we were somewhat proud of even though we seldom traveled in that (coz it was not allowed or it was reserved for Staffs)...It was the Jeep... A thing I wudn't forget coz during one of the strike me n Sam were the first persons to inflate it's tyre ........And Anitha madam pulled me on that incident...So thought of putting that too in here...Sandeep was there and I remember there was a comedy when madam asked us abt tht incident.. remember that Sand?????

Bus can't do anything without pilots.. we had two pilots back then, Reji ettan and Shaaji ettan..( we fondly called them ettans)... I dont remember ever taking bus pass from College office.. All my rides were just free of cost... Thanks to them.. will get to know more about them during our IT Mela trip to Thiruvananthapuram....

Here on Bus will be a constant actor in every post, as it is so hard to complete them without it....

The College..........

My first encounter with the college as I mentioned in my previous post was quite interesting as I had no idea what's in store for me as I neared my college. But it was quite appealing to me as it looked very different from other colleges.... And slowly I fell in love with that place.. We used to mention it as a hill station of some sort... If I start describing Wayanad then I dont think my vocabulary wud be sufficient for expressing all that comes to me with the mere mention of that place. So I will not go into full details as of now, but will definitely put my thoughts here and there as and when required.

So coming back to college.. This was the road(mud road or shortcut which usually wud be a hell during rains and guess what Wayanad received the most of the rains during the monsoons)..But still we loved it like anything... lots of stories of somebody slipping here are still fresh in our minds...

That was the beginning of the usual college days for people coming to college (with the exception of the College bus goers). So here's how a day started with everybody gathering around for a cup of tea or a puff of smoke and calmly trekking the steps and then this road...

which led to the college...had something interesting on its way... our College sign board with all sorts of jungles around it reminding us that we were in Wayanad........

And once in the college, it's was an different atmosphere altogether...
And the famous spot used to be the Shuttle Court..(Sorry, Renju missed to take snap of that).. hey how cud u miss that dear..

And the road to the Office, Principal room, Old Library, hey these rooms never mattered at all.. but what that mattered is that this road led to the canteen and that's where you wud find the whole bunch of "us" regardless of whether class is going or not...The Favorite Chill out place for everyone.....

And then our class "The Royal CSE".. it was always the pivot point of college and everything happens around it's corner only... ECE guys please ignore after all I was in CSE...But CSE/ECE/Archi(As we used to call them-Architecture Batch) didn't/never made any difference during first year.. It was only when De Juniors came..things started hotting up..Till then we were one and the same.. but even after that we were one but not the same.... :)

This might seem to be a closed door now(As new building has come up and things have been shifted), but once this door never closed..It can't actually.. It was the resting ground of gr8 legends who were unique in every sense.. Same is for ECE guys too... and Archi... In one sense we the first batch of the college were just different altogether from all other colleges.. and as my blog proceeds you will come to know how different we actually were!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wud be wrong on my part if I forget or dont mention the following Snaps or things ..whatever.. it was our famous Corridor .........

Here's where everything happened... They were the lifeline of our college .. It connected every one to other persons in one sort and it was the most common hangout place during breaks, lunch, events... Each and every pillar will have a different story to tell............And the same is for every class, every bench and each Window.......

Even though I wrote very less(Compared to what I really wanted to) in this post but this snaps speak for themselves.. and everyone who has been there has his own version of how these places were important in their life...So what are you waiting for ..guys, pen down something that you felt about it in here.....I have all ears :) .....

My Life @ College..

Felt about writing this a long time ago but dunno whether work kept me busy or something else.
Renju talked to me and he was almost into thrashing me for not starting it. He knows once I start scribbling I will not stop until I finish it.So here I am from the beginning where everything started.

Actually the real problem was where do I start. I think that was the biggest hurdle in front of me, which never let me begin.Beginning was the hurdle to begin.ha ha ha....Lemme give it a try....I will start from Day one and will go back to flashback whenever it is needed.. OK guys here it is....

Day One: Jan 6th 2000...

May be the biggest day of my life.Dad was with me. It was early morning and we were at Kozhikode(Calicut) railway station. We came from TVM by Kannur Express. Dad was posted at TVM. Actually for the first time I heard about Mananthavady when my admission letter came and I was totally clue less about where it came on the map of Kerala. Anyways I am going there only, will see it then. We reached Calicut bus Station(KSRTC), and boarded the only Super Express Bus for Mananthavady. So that's how my first Journey started towards my college.
We reached mananthavady 3 hrs later. The Driver was kind enough to stop the bus near college stop, this stop is really gonna be popular with time.

We walked towards the college. A big building was in my sight and I thought who said this is a new college. No way. We headed for the steps and as we reached top I was quite amused to see the big building, but dad shrugged and said there's your college. I saw a small Board in which it was written GECW. Oh this is it, now it lives up to the reputation of a newly started Govt. college. We went to college office and finished all the formalities and I was given a admission number of 147, may be one of the last persons to join the college.

Now as the formalities finished(admission), next task was to search for an accommodation. We went to The Royal CSE class, and there's Arun and Rengith standing at the corridors. My dad asked about the room and they said their room is already filled and it will be difficult to study if number of persons increase. That gave me the outlook of this college.. Truly professional ,students really serious about studies.. Can't stop myself laughing while writing this coz this is the first comedy I encountered in the college.(Rengith n Arun) will definitely laugh.I doubt whether Renju was there with them... anyhow will comeback to this incident later coz it's gonna be used a lot here....

By the evening we got an accommodation. It was in Thonichaal..@ Paul sir rental house and I got some cool new roommates... Jyothish,Sanoop,Sreejith,Umesh,Jishad, Baburaj and now I am added to their group(I dunno whether they liked me on the first meeting itself but definitely the first meeting was the start of a lifelong bond). After the formal round of introduction we were soon on the same boat... Dad left by evening, and this is gonna be first time I am seperated from my family altogether but I was already a part of another family. I thought about mama. She never left me out of her sight even for one day, I dunno how is she gonna react to this. She cried bitterly when I left. So I was in a bit of dilemma, whether to celebrate the new Freedom or should worry about mama. But slowly I got adjusted as I was in new family and they were just superb. Our home was a perfect Second home for me.

Sandeep and Binu Kumar lived nearby and soon Sandeep joined me in my room. And the family was completed....Next day i.e my first day @ college as a student:
Water was chilling cold, it was so hard to take a bath, still I manage it somehow and we were on our way to College...I dunno whether I got any attention when I first entered the class, but that was soon to follow...Met Ajith, Renju, Sivaji, Rengith, Arun and it was just fun as we had same sort of frequency tuning....Dont remember much of the classes that were taken on that day except one from Mr. Nisar. I remember he used to be HOD(Head of the Department) but it didnt took long enough for us to believe he was the real HOD. Hey guys hope you can fill up that full form, I dont want to protray anyone on this blog. I am just gonna write how it went in college......

So I will just start with some major incidents or what it can be called a Milestone of some sort...
(Guys it's not easy to write everything at a single stretch.. I will pin up regularly and each event mentioned below will lead you to a link describing that.. so keep this link in your bookmarks and visit frequently)... Comments are most welcome coz it'z natural I am gonna miss something so help me fill up the gaps and put up your thoughts too.....I am looking forward to it :)

Daa umeshe,
Actually it wasn't me. My Mom went inside our class room and asked to the girls sitting over there. I dint get a chance to stop my Mom.
Ente maanam annu thanne kappalu kayari.
And The sad part is that, there wasn't any mens room for students that time.
It was the first day of my joining. Almost 70% of admissions were over by that time, I guess.

Daa Umeshe,

There was one more incident, regarding mens room. May be you are confused with that.

One day at lunch break, me and Baburaj were roaming in and around the college. Simply we walked inside the near by Govt Arts College (ithonnu kandittu thanne ullu ennu theerumaanichu). At the same instant, some Arts college guys got angry and ran to us. They asked us, why are we roaming over there. Without thinking twice, I answered that we are searching for a mensroom. They had a good laugh about that and adviced us that we are not supposed to be there. Ennittu avide ninnu irakki vittu :(
It was on second day of my joining, I guess.

This remained as a secret until that day evening. On evening, we all were retuning to thonichal after class. You were also with us. That time Art college guys were sitting near the Gate, taking the sensus of engineering students (mainly girl students, I suppose). Then this cruel Arts college guy came and called me "Hey bathroom boy". Nammalu mind cheythilla, petennu avide ninnu scoot aayi, thats all. Next day we got popular, since we were the first to make a visit to Govt. Arts College.
Pinneedu nammalu avide kayari nirangi, athu vere kaaryam.
